Students will be exposed to the expanding role of Data Warehouses, the strategies behind their development, and the utilization of their information to answer fundamental business questions. This one-day course presents all topics in a nontechnical format as the instructor combines these basics; defining a warehouse, links to legacy systems, warehouse design and implementation, migration strategies, automation techniques, tool integration and metadata, and end user reporting and utilization.

All aspects of this class will incorporate the specific architecture and tools of the client to illustrate the implementation of these techniques.

At the end of this course, delegates will be able to:

  • Define the basic building blocks for a Data Warehouse.
  • Illustrate the differences between Enterprise and Data Mart warehouses and advantages of both models.
  • Discuss the three-tiered architecture for optimal warehouse creation including data staging, data presentation are and data access tools.
  • Explain the migration from legacy systems operational data to warehouse information in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load).
  • Understand the process of data transformation and its importance in warehouse development.
  • Define the role of metadata and its central role in data warehousing.
  • Define the role of the end user community and their usage of warehouse information. (Both their utilization of the data and how they participate in the development process.)
  • Understand the differences between relational and multidimensional warehouse structures and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • Discuss the role of the star schema in warehouse design and development.
  • Illustrate the principle obstacles to implementation for warehouse projects.
  • Discuss business intelligence data delivery tool categories (reports, ad hoc reporting, OLAP solutions, dashboards, scorecards, etc.)
